The casino's claim to fame is that it's the oldest onshore one in Goa, and it still has traditional coin slot machines. This casino doesn't get as much attention as the other casinos because of its quieter south Goa location. However, it's well-known among regular gamblers and locals. Captain James Braganza, heading the port operations, said the state government is toying with the possibility of auctioning the ship. We will seek legal opinion on the matter,he said.

Kanda’s company had purchased the vessel from Leela Beach Resort way back in 2009 but could not get it operational as it had no valid documents to procure the permission.

Goa government officials said that the ship was “almost abandoned” midway in the Mandovi River channel and it was amounting to navigational hurdle for other vessels using the inland waterway.

The vessel was anchored just below twin Mandovi Bridges connecting Panaji to neighbouring suburb.

The tourism department had earlier issued two notices to the company in January and June,2013 directing the vessel owner to remove the vessel under Section 7 of the Goa tourist places (protection and maintenance) Act,2001.

Kanda is accused of abetting the suicide of 23-year-old former air hostess Geetika Sharma, who was earlier employed in his MDLR airlines.

The Casino Goa

The Casino Goa is a live casino[1] located offshore in Panaji in Goa. The casino is located on a yacht, the M.V. Caravela, anchored in the River Mandovi. The casino vessel worth is 110 million Rupees and is owned by the Advani Pleasure Cruise Co Ltd as a joint venture between the company and Casinos Austria. It has around eleven tables of American Roulette, Blackjack and Paplu (Rummy) besides a few electronic slot machines.

The setup of the casino was controversial as live gambling is outlawed in India. This was partially circumvented by hosting it off the mainland. The government in Goa is promoting offshore casinos in Goa by granting new licences to more companies in an attempt to generate more tourist related revenue. Goa state is the only one in India that permits both electronic onland casinos as well as live offshore ones.
