According to the Dessert Sun, a local Palm Springs newspaper, the Spa Resort Casino will no longer offer poker to its patrons, as it was announced yesterday that the nine-table poker room would be converted into a non-smoking slots area that will reopen in a couple of weeks. The closure will also cause layoffs of Spa Resort Casino staff.
The Spa Resort Casino is located in Palm Springs and operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians who also own and operate other casinos in the area, including the larger Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa located in Rancho Mirage –which recently opened a 16-table poker room.
The article in the Dessert Sun stated how the room was nearly closed in 2008 due to little weekday interest, but a petition was circulated that saved the poker room at the time. The man responsible for collecting the 221 signatures that saved the poker room in 2008, Alfred Lepow, said he was shocked to hear about the closure: “I’m in shock: I had no inkling, no warning it would be closed… My gosh, that’s a major blow to all our poker aficionados, we were going to start a new jackpot system next week.”
A local poker player, Jill Cohen, told the Dessert Sun, “My guess is the strategy of the tribe was to close the Palm Springs poker room once the Rancho Mirage expansion was complete,’’
